Sept: Sept of Thunder and Lightning
Caern: Scorched Earth
Level: 2
Gauntlet: 4
Tribal Structure: Led by a lupus Shadow Lord Alpha that has been accepted into the caern for unknown reasons, this caern is almost exclusively Wendigo and Uktena, and they are suspicious of outsiders.
Totem: Changing Woman (west), Father Sun (east) The Hero Twins: Monster Slayer and Child of the Water (invoked together, north and south)
The tribe is descended from the Tudinu or "Desert People", ancestors of most of the tribes of Southern Paiutes whose traditional territory is the lower Colorado River valley as well as the mountains and arroyos of the Mojave Desert in Nevada, California and Utah. Beginning in the early 19th century non-native settlers moved into the area, resulting in the displacement of the local tribe from both its water-rich lowland winter and tree-rich mountainous summer campgrounds.
Significant permanent settlement began after 1855 when the area was annexed to the United States. That same year a mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) built a fort at the Las Vegas Springs with the dual purpose of converting the Paiutes and acting as a node on a Salt Lake-to-the-sea shipping route. Although the mission was short-lived, it marked the beginning of permanent American settlement at the site when, ten years later, the fort was rebuilt, reinhabited and re-christened the Las Vegas Rancho.
Settlement increased after William A. Clark took ownership of much of the tribe's land, built the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad through it and established the town of Las Vegas, Nevada adjacent to the region's most significant water source. Seeing the tribe's dispossession, on December 30, 1911 an unknown benefactor deeded 10 acres of spring-fed downtown Las Vegas land to the Paiutes, creating the Las Vegas Indian Colony. Until 1983 this was the tribe's only communal land, forming a small "town within a town" in downtown Las Vegas. In that year, Congress returned to the tribe 3,800 acres (1,500 ha) of land between the eastern slopes of Mount Charleston in the Spring Mountains and the western flanks of the Sheep Range. This land now known as the Snow Mountain Reservation, and most of the original 10 acres was sold to finance the settlement of their returned ancestral lands.
Ten miles east of the main settlement is a lone mesa known as Frenchman's Peak. The mesa rises about 850 feet above the surrounding terrain. A spire, known as the Wolf's Tail, rises another 50 feet above the southern end of the mesa. The plateau is 2 miles long and 3/4 of a mile wide. The center of the caern covers the entire plateau of the mesa. The mesa holds a sweat lodge and a few other buildings, and the landscape is subtly modified for brutal defense of the mesa top.
The bawn of the caern extends many miles to east and west, and is wedged between the north edge of Las Vegas/North Las Vegas and Area 51. This area covers several small and strategically placed settlements of Kinfolk around the mesa. These Kinfolk have several means to alert the Garou on the mesa. These include smoke or mirrors by day, and powerful lights or fires by night.
In addition to the established boundaries of the bawn, the sept oversees several other areas, including their kin in Indian Springs north of Area 51, Red Rock Canyon, and the Old Mormon Fort in Las Vegas proper. The territory encompasses thousands of square miles, and the sept is well aware that it cannot deflect all incursions. Still, trespasses are not taken lightly. The sept is known to have relationships with several other caerns in Nevada, Arizona, California and Utah that involve mutual defense of dedicated invasions.
The ancient nature of the caern means that the center is covered with spirits that have been dedicated to its defense. The center is littered with offerings for various spirits, and the Theurges take great pains to keep all the caerns defenders happy.
