Marion Hicks and J.C. Grayson built the El Cortez, downtown Las Vegas' first major resort, in 1941 for $245,000. The location at 6th Street and Fremont was originally considered too far from downtown, but it quickly became so profitable, Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Gus Greenbaum and Moe Sedway bought the property in 1945 for $600,000.
These Wise Guy kinfolk immediately set about installing a permanent caern in the heart of the exploding city. The hotel was renovated to include 364 rooms, and the cowboy motif allowed for portions of the caern to be hidden in plain sight.
The bawn reaches out to the street, allowing for spiritual monitoring of the much more important second floor offices. A waterfall in a cowboy scene in one unused corner of the casino floor covers the entrance to a stairway that takes travelers to the second floor, through four security doors. The sept closely guards the secret of the caern's entrance, and specifically crafted fetishes negate much of the ability to detect the caern's existence in the heart of the city. Outsiders who stumble on the caern's location are forced to stay until they have been "deemed worthy" by the Warder; this is usually a 10-year period of time, during which the interloper must serve with each of the caern officers.
In the center of the caern, leaves rustle in an unearthly breeze that blows gently through a hidden glen in the middle of the second floor area. A massive tree appears to grow out of the floor and into the ceiling, limbs splayed in majestic purity. In reality, the tree exists mainly in the Umbra, and can be better seen in that realm, though it appears to be semi-permanently manifested in the physical realm. Branches filled with giant, juice-laden fruit appears to reach to the sky, despite its location indoors. White sand, made from the ground bones of the caern's dead Metis neatly covers the area around the massive tree's root system.
When the caern is opened (with the Rite of Caern Opening), the transcendant form of the Smiling Happy Buddha appears within the trunk of the primordial tree. There, he sits cross-legged and smiling. His large belly jiggles in waves from his silent inner laugh. His right palm is opened to the sky, symbolically flowing with wealth and gifts, while his left palm faces the viewer. The middle finger and thumb on his left hand form a circle, and the other fingers point upwards, offering peace and tranquility. The Smiling Happy Buddha not only knows peace with Gaia, but he also knows that within the balance of the three major universal forces, there is enough wealth for everyone.
