Manny and Eamon sat in a small library within Eamon's home. Book cases over 7 feet tall and 8 feet wide. They were filled with books on economics, literature, fiances, and poetry. Most were old and worn. There was a small writing table and three chairs in the room. Manny and Eamon occupied two of the chairs, facing each other and discussing plans for the upcoming week. Both wore plain suits. Manny's suit was black while Eamon's suit was light gray. There was no need to be stylish at home. They were among friends and no reason to impress. There conversation was light, but quickly became serious. Eamon narrowed his eyes and glared at Manny.
“I think its time, Manny”
Manny was unsure of Eamon's meaning. He reared his head back when Eamon showed his fangs. Manny had seen Eamon use his fang countless times, but never from this point of view. The charming rogue that was Eamon was replaced by a monster. Manny stood to his feet and questioned Eamon's intentions.
“I saved you once, Manny. I want to see if you can save yourself this time.”
Eamon slowly stood from his chair and reached for Manny. Manny pushed his hand away and pleaded. He claimed that they were friends and he didn't have to feed on him. Eamon shook his head.
“Feed? No. Not feed. I'm going to crack ever bone in your spine and watch you die slowly”
Manny's eyes narrowed. He looked toward the door, but that was his mistake. He took his eyes off Eamon. Eamon grabbed Manny and tossed him into a book case. Manny cried out in pain. He saw his so-called friend walking toward. Mouth open, eyes glaring, and fangs ready to bite. Manny's fear left him and his courage returned. He had been through to much to die here. Manny screamed and charged.
Five minutes would pass. For Manny, it felt like a life time. The library was in shambles. Every piece of furniture was broken, books were tossed everywhere, and the walls were dented. Manny's clothes were torn and his body was covered in wounds. He knelt over Eamon with a lead paper weight in his hands. It was small enough to grasp in a single hand, but quite solid. Somehow Manny managed to bludgeon Eamon with the paper weight. He dented the right side of Eamon's face and killed him.
Manny stood up and stumbled toward the door. He was exhausted, but he was alive. As he grasped the door handle, he heard Eamon's voice.
“Don't leave”
Manny couldn't resist and turned to see Eamon standing. His face was uninjured. He was even smiling.
“Manny, I apologize. This had to be done. I had to test you. My enemies will be your enemies. They will be just as a savage and monstrous as I was. When faced with darkness, I needed to see your reaction.”
Eamon inched so close to Manny, that he was placing his hand on Manny's shoulder.
“I chose wisely, Manny. You're a fighter. You deserve your prize”
Eamon could see the distrust in Manny's eyes, but his grip on him was too strong.
“Close your eyes”
Manny did so. Manny fought to keep them open, but he couldn't.
“Open your eyes”
Manny opened his eyes. Eamon stood with a clay cup in one hand and his other hand behind his back.
“Drink. This is your prize”
Manny shook his head and questioned what was inside. Eamon sighed.
“I won't give you speeches, Manny. I won't sway you like the cattle of this city. To protect me, you will need this. Make your decision”
Eamon turned his back and waited. He also listened. He heard the clay cup drop to the ground. He heard Manny gasping for air. He heard Manny's heart beat excessively. Eamon looked over his shoulder and saw Manny staring at the ceiling. Eamon spoke.
“You feel it. Your body doesn't hurt anymore. Your mind is clear. You've felt nothing like this. This is the power you need to protect me. That power and feeling is something that only I can give. Do you understand?”
Manny nodded his head agreement. His eyes were still focused on the ceiling. Eamon walked over to Manny and grasped his shoulder.
“You've chosen well, Manny. Now let me show you can do with the prize I've given you.”
They walked into that library as friends, but they walked out as brothers. At least to Manny. To Eamon, this was something else entirely.
